Journey to the Heart Empty Journey to the Heart

Post  Guest Sat Nov 14, 2020 9:19 pm

Her heart raced as she readied herself for the leap, her prey oblivious to her position only one-hundred feet from where the hare chewed on leaves and bark. Her pink orbs locked onto her target as he bent to all fours, sniffing the ground. That's it, keep chewing... She lowered her hackles for the jump. Her muscles tightened and her breath stilled. She leaped.

The hare sprang into action and Freya gave chase to her prey, growling in anticipation that he wouldn't get away. She had been so confident in fact, that she didn't realize the hole the rabbit had gone into until her paw stomped into it. Freya stumbled and barked in surprise as she face planted into the dry earth. She removed her paw instantly and winced at the throbbing ache she knew she would feel for a while before it got better. "Damned rodent..." she grumbled. She licked at her paw, a slight split of the skin visible. She tasted iron before her brain registered the sting produced by the wound. She sighed. Hungry, she would wait again until she had a meal to satisfy her hunger.

Tired and hot, Freya moved away from the area and padded over to one of the various groves in the area and lay down to rest. She didn't much like the heat, but she didn't know what to do. She couldn't return home knowing the history of her ancestors, nor was she ready to risk tooth and claw by visiting the lands of the Hybrids or the Domestics, though stories from her pack led her to believe the Domestics might have parishes in the North, starved and weak. Such negative thoughts made the she-wolf weary to think about much more. Freya laid her head about her sore paw and slept.

Journey to the Heart Empty Re: Journey to the Heart

Fallen made his way through the desert in the heart of Canidae, definitely regretting his fur color around now. Panting as he continued his journey to somewhere better, he internally groaned. Thinking to himself, Desert and dark fur do not make for a happy me. He glanced around for any decent shade, just somewhere to cool down at least a little. He was a little hungry, and definitely thirsty, but mostly right now he just needed to take a break. Probably would be better to travel when it's a little cooler anyways. He thought as his light orbs eventually landed on a spot by a rock formation. It wasn't perfect, but it was shaded enough to get the job done at least for now, so he walked over to it. He dug at the near its base, pushing away all the warmer earth to expose some that would be a bit cooler. When he was satisfied with his work he nodded, circled a few times and plopped down, laying on his underbelly.
He yawned slightly, as he stared out, observing the lands before him. Times like this he really missed having a family, and a pack. He did a fine job keeping himself entertained, but it was still pretty lonely being on your own like this. A while back he had come across another Rogue, and it was nice to finally have someone else to talk to besides himself. I keep talking to myself I'm going to end up losing my sanity. he thought to himself as he kept observing his surroundings. He raised his nose slightly to begin sniffing the air, trying to see if he could smell anything, and also trying to hear anything; such as water, potential prey, or even other wolves. He could've sworn there the faintest of blood smells, but it was gone as quick as it came so he just brushed it off as the heat getting to his brain. He laid his head on top of his paws, and just enjoyed the brief relief from the heat he had.
At one point Fallen must've dozed off, because he woke up and it was later into the day than it was previously. He stood up from his comfortable bed, and stretched his torso as well as his front legs before stretching his hind legs as well. He shook the sand out of his fur. He climbed to the top of the rock formation he had rested under. Sunset was close, it would be cooler, and soon there would be plenty of desert hares hopping around. He decided water was more important though. The dark male jumped down from the rock formation and began once more on his way to find water. It was still warmer than he'd like. He was mostly accustomed to cold climates, and all the snow that came with it, but at least the heat was more bearable now.
Eventually he had made his way to a grove, and there was a familiar scent that he couldn't place. He got hopeful, thinking that maybe it was a packmate from his previous pack, but if it was a packmate he should've been able to place a name to the scent. He huffed, frustrated that he couldn't remember who it might be. However, his curiosity was peaked, and so he followed the scent. He tilted his head as he came to the sleeping form of another wolf that he recognized as a rogue he had previously, and briefly met. He wanted to say hi, but he didn't want to disturb her or scare the dickens out of her either. He didn't want to be some creep staring at someone asleep either, he glanced around somewhat nervously, not entirely sure how to handle the situation. His mouth opened and closed as he was in mental turmoil on how to approach this. This is ridiculous. Either wake her up or walk away. he thought to himself, Alright that's it! I'm going to turn on a metaphorical heel, and walk away. Yes? Yes. Good. Glad we can agree. with his decision steeled, he moved around the sleeping she-wolf, being as quiet as possible to not wake her, and continued on his merry way hunting for water.

Sand crept between his toes, searing his paw-pads. A different sort of bite from the snow he had known for much of his life. Who would have thought he’d miss the ice yanking on the fur beneath his feet with every step? Pausing every now and again to bite the icicles off was far preferred over the scorching heat eating away at his skin.

The whole land rippled with it, the air distorted by the beating rays of the sun. Many times, reflections on the horizon made him change course, his dry mouth hungering for moisture, but all day he had been chasing ghosts and his thirst grew greater—the heat soaking his fur thicker.

What grand idea had motivated him to stray this far south? Prey had little to feed on, his own meals preferring the greener, lusher lands over the rolling dunes. Even the white desert of endless snow and mountain he called his home was better than this. No water snaked across the landscape, gathered in small puddles or giant lakes. Everything was barren, either dead or dying, and only the foolish and the desperate would tread here.

Which one was he?

The sun sunk lower in the sky, the rising night taking the edge off the heat—if only a little. Panting for every cooling breath he could get, Ezra trudged to a cluster of dry trees. Trees meant water. There had to be water.

Shadows bent over him, further freeing him of the sun’s cruelty. His gaze roved between the trees, searching—praying. There was only dry ground. Sand and rock and—

His body went rigid, movement catching his eyes. Shit. Among the thin trees, a dark shape stood, and belatedly he breathed in a gulp of a dangerous scent. Wolves. Not one of them but two. The second one resting on the ground in front of the black one’s paws, its—her?—smell lacking the rot that came with death. She must be asleep.

The second wolf, his scent betraying him to be male, circled around her, continuing his path, and Ezra met his eyes, fighting for calm and composure against the tension seizing his body, raising his hackles. His jaws clenched, frustrated he was fighting a losing battle. His body ached too much, his legs too weak beneath him. Still he stood. Stood and waited for the inevitable. Only one question roared through the stabbing fog clouding his mind: what are wolves doing here?

Nyx forgot the taste and feel of the desert sun as the sweltering waves crashed against her heating onyx pelt. Atlas, her brother, who looked right at home shifted his cranium towards her and gave her a ghost of a smile as she read the unspoken words in his eyes. Can’t handle the heat? A rumbling growl rattling out of her the second after before she twisted back forward again and shook her frame, sand flying off her lithe frame. My gods. She hated the heat. The kingdom of sand stretched for miles as the siblings looked out from on top of a dune, both of our throats yearning for a single drop of water. Stumbling down an unusually large rise, Nyx lept the rest of the way down before she inhaled the desiccated atmosphere. It was faint but the scent of wolves was pungent enough that it made her internally cringe. She looked at Atlas and saw his eyes narrow a bit before he replied, “We should stay clear for now.” His words were curt and low as he quickly turned away from the trail the wolves probably took and started forward towards a bank of trees in the distance. She watched her bother for a few moments before bounding after him fluidly. “Alright for now at least.” She said, accent thick that it was on the verge of Russian rather than English.

We traveled for a good hour or two before we reached the pit of trees. Chrome orbs half-lidded from exhaustion, Nyx collapsed in a cool spot near a knolled twisting tree whose branches curled around one another as they rose. Her brother who didn’t have a dislike or like for the heat panted against his own warped tree before he crumpled to the ground, muscles rippling under his tawny and inky build. “We should travel at night so we fair better in the sun.” She said after about twenty minutes of silence between the two. Atlas cracked open his sharp burnt gold gaze before closing his eyes again and then falling asleep. Honestly, she didn’t know how he found enough peace to sleep when the sun-scorched the ground around them and thirst was a constant ache in their throats but she supposed when there was enough exhaustion involved it was possible. Her thoughts coming to a close, the maiden flickered her optics shut as she lolled off to dreamless sleep.

Journey to the Heart Coolte17

The sweltering rays of the sun beamed down upon the wolf as she weakly stumbled through the hot sand. Out of everything in her life, this had to be what she hated the most at the moment. The sun, the heat and the inability to find crisp water. Studying the surroundings her eyes gave her, she couldn't quite put her paw on it, it confused her. The terrain seemed to be covered in only sand and there was hardly anything else to look forward to. A raspy groan filters out of her mouth as her frame wobbles, her fatigued body experiencing a lack of balance. Wherever she was, she had to get the hell out of here.

The despairing need for water made it hard for her to remember where she was, what she was doing here and how she even ended up here. Blinking out of her thoughts, she decided to continue by taking a wobbly step. Maneuvering her way through, her body soon began shaking with fatigue and effort as she reteaches herself how to walk again. Now and then, she would stumble and cascade to the ground, sand exploding from the impact, causing her to cough and sputter again. Once she found her balance and got used to the use of walking again, the female stared blankly as she focused on only moving forward.

Nothing made any sense to her. Maybe things would become clear if she found her way out of this area. If there even was a way out.

"It would probably be a lot easier to just lay down and die.." Muttering to herself, she paused briefly, surprised that she had even spoken. The nagging thought of giving up trailed in her mind, trying to shove the concept away. Continuing her pace, she recognizes small spots of other creatures like herself. Feeling a sharp pain in her stomach, her instincts were commanding her to eat; but what exactly was she going to devour? Sand? Her silhouette moves in a stiff motion, proceeding to march forwards. Were these wolves going to be friendly or would she have to defend herself? 'A.. dog?' She thought, seeing the canine become stiff over the wolves they also noticed from afar. It looks as if they have not noticed Kali yet, which is a bonus. But what exactly should she do now?

As she reached her destination, she slightly relaxes, calmly waiting to see if someone would notice her approach. Her lips move, chest widening in a swift motion as she released a breath of air, deciding whether or not to utter a word. "Hello?" A sudden pang of guilt overtook her body, everyone seemed so tightened up. Surely another newcomer had to aggravate them even more. Especially since one of the wolves seemed to be sleeping now that she managed to get a good look. Deciding to not say another word, Kali's body screamed for downtime but she wasn't going to try to get some shut eye with this dog being the way he was. Looking over at him, she wasn't sure if she should be preparing to defend herself or not. She barely mustered enough energy to get herself here.

At this point everything seemed endless. Whatever burning yet soft material shifting beneath the weight of the masculine stretched out as far as his bicolored eyes could see. Not a single cloud hung anywhere in the sky which of course allowed the sun to send its intense rays more intensely onto whatever landscape this was. Akela couldn’t remember how or why he ended up here no matter how hard he pressured himself to think but one thing was sure, he wouldn’t just lay down and be consumed by dehydration. Instinct forced his body to continue onward leading further and further into the new unknown ahead. With a lolled out tongue and the ever so occasional limp due to the temperature beneath his pads stinging with each step taken Akela continued. He walked with a hanging cranium from exhaustion as his orbs scanned the sandy hills for any sign of life. More than anything the rogue wanted a cold refreshing drink of water - even if one single lap was all that he could have. The dark coat that was draped over his muscular frame only made the situation worsen by each passing moment as unbearable heat heightened his body temperature. The saliva that previously had dripped from the tip of his tongue was no more as it had dried up some time ago. Miles ago the urge to scent out hopeful creatures died away from the darkness within his nasal passages burned almost with every inhale. Every so often he thought he saw a small pool of water surrounded by strange looking trees but just as his hopes would begin to rise, poof it vanished. He should’ve known from the first time it happened when he ran towards it only to discover more sand and it was a wavy vision each time. Lost within his own endless thoughts, imaginations of water and or catching a nice plump meal to overcome his hunger. With his head still hanging low and eyes half closed he barely noticed he walked straight passed two distant canines and straight to where more rested until he stepped straight onto one who was resting on the ground. With a surprised yip, he leapt up and immediately spoke out, “Oh! Apologizes.. I didn’t notice anyone. I thought I was just smelling and hearing things again.”

Journey to the Heart Empty Re: Journey to the Heart

Freya might have been having a nice dream, but the damn thing didn't last long...

The collision forced her eyes open in surprise, a pitched yelp escaping from her as she sat up to a sitting position, one paw raised though she had touched something she didn't want to. Her gaze met blue and orange irises and she snarled at first before she registered his words. "Watch it!" She snapped. She didn't mean to be harsh, but how could she not when she'd been disturbed from a peaceful sleep beside hunger and thirst? The lady took in the Male and sighed. She dropped the tension in her shoulders and relaxed her face. "Alright, I didn't mean it, but that still hurt." She added, meaning the soreness of her side. She figured this stranger didn't mean to hurt her, let alone eat her. He seemed younger than her and his eye color peculiar, though she couldn't speak much for herself.

Her pink irises searched around as she realized the two of them were not alone. She recognized one of them, a dark Male she knew as Fallen, an acquaintance. She frowned when she saw the domestic standing before him and a flashback of her past appeared before her eyes. "Um, they're not going to fight each other...right?" She swallowed slowly, rising to her feet, tail up in alert. After a moment, she heard the small voice of another and her eyes fell to a resting she wolf with brown fur tones. Freya perked her ears and smiled. "Hello!" She responded politely.

As she watched the two before her like many of the others, Freya wondered what could have brought everyone to this place at the same time.

Fallen just wanted some water, as anyone should in this god forsaken place, but those with dark fur probably craved it a little more. He had just begun to bypass the sleeping she-wolf, but out of nowhere not one, or two, but three new scents showed up. Fallen turned, half expecting a pack of jackals even though the smells didn't match. Fortunately they weren't jackals. One, based on the scent seemed to be female, though she was a little taller than he expected of a female. The other, whom he somehow made eye contact with was clearly a male, and fairly large, but not a wolf? So he is a dog. Can't say I've seen many of them out here. Wonder what happened. he thought with a curious tilt of his head as he observed the canine.
He was more than a little surprised when the dog got stiff and raised his hackles. He wasn't aware that there was anything threatening about himself, much less the sleeping she-wolf. Although, he was a lone dog, and there was more than one wolf, so he couldn't really blame his actions. The dark male was unsure how to proceed given the circumstances, but he thought he should at least try to get him to relax. "Listen, Buddy... You're not really my type. But I'm flattered I got you stopped in your tracks. he said with a wink aimed in the new canine's direction. Wowww, inappropriate. Nice going, me. he said and mentally hit his head on a metaphorical tree. "Also. I'm not going to eat you. You seem a little too tough for my sensitive palette. And for what it's worth I'm not going to hurt you either, I just want to find some water, man." he said nonchalantly, as he shrugged his shoulders. He then directed his attention to the tall she-wolf, she seemed even more nervous than the dog. This heat is really making everyone loopy huh... he thought. Although he took this time to get a better look at the pair of canines. The she-wolf's coat was full of warm, earth tones, with a pair of emeralds that would make even domesticated felines green with envy. The domestic, not that Fallen knew much of anything about those, but he was completely certain that he had all the ladies drooling as well. It didn't take a genius to acknowledge attractive canines of any species after all.
Sooner rather than later, the source of the third scent appeared. The figure seemed familiar, and the closer they got the more Fallen recognized the scent as well. His tail immediately began wagging rapidly behind him. Could it be? he thought, and soon the figure was clear as day. Fallen's tail began wagging more as he saw his best friend from pup-hood approaching. Akela just casually strode by the dog and the other she-wolf, causing Fallen to tilt his head curiously. He somehow managed to step on Freya. Fallen cringed for him as she woke up snapping and growling. And that is a shining example of why I didn't dare speak to her... he thought as his friend apologized, and Freya got a chance to reply as well. After that thought, it was fair game. He let his overwhelming happiness come pouring out, beyond ecstatic that he finally found someone from his old pack, and his best friend at that. Fallen sprinted from where he stood; plowing into Akela, he tackled him to the ground, and made sure to catch up on all of snuggles he'd been missing since he left Silent Storm. After a few seconds of just laying on top of Akela, Fallen snapped back into his right mind. His eyes going wide as he realized how much he way more than likely just humiliated himself. He quickly slid off of Akela. "Sorry, man. It's been ages. I'm calm, totally calm." he said with a nervous chuckle, trying to seem as laid back as possible. However, his tail making dust whirlwinds on the ground as it continued wagging betrayed his words. Casually he put one of his front paws over his tail, but then rather than a whirlwind, there was the dull thump. thump. of his tail against the ground. He rolled his eyes, giving up and let his tail go to do what it wanted. Stupid thing's got a mind of its own. he internally groaned, but was grateful for his dark fur right around now.

More scents drifted to his nose. Not two wolves, as he had initially thought and now saw, but another three of them. Maybe four? He flicked his gaze around, quick glances scanning the grove but revealing only trees. Ezra didn't dare keep his eyes off the two visible wolves for long to get a good, proper look.

He was a fool. That was the answer to his question. A fool in so many ways to let himself wander into their midst.

The black wolf seemed not at all concerned by his presence, only surprised and perhaps a little... hesitant. Not many dogs travelled south, let alone straight into Canidae's Heart. Why would they? There was nothing waiting for them there beyond death and a peek at a life they would never be allowed to have. Had he paid more attention to his surroundings and not the desperate hope of finding water he might have been able to avoid this stranger. This whole mess. He shouldn't have left the Northern Province to begin with.

With a wink, the male jested Erza wasn't his type but he was flattered nonetheless. Annoyance sparked in his breast and he ground his teeth, unwittingly aggravating the throbbing ache in his head. The flexing muscles in his jaw were the sole outward sign of his anger. With anyone else, at home among his friends, he would have responded in kind, quipped back and laughed. But he couldn't even dredge up an ounce of humour from his toes.

The male's promise not to harm him did little to douse his boiling blood, the words so empty against the screams still roiling in his mind, the images haunting him on the loneliest nights. "What are your words worth, wolf?" he bit back, tone not as flat as he had intended and each word a dry rasp. The wolf might truly be here for water, plain and simple, but everyone knew blood was a liquid, too.

A soft, rhythmic brush of paws on the earth made his ear swerve in its direction. Yet another wolf approached, mismatched eyes unfocussed and half-lidded. He marched straight past them and stumbled into the slumbering female. She jolted awake, snapping over his apology.

The female's final words had scarcely left her mouth when the black wolf sprang into sudden motion. Erza instantly planted his feet, ready to take the charge he had anticipated and defend himself. The male turned and instead bounded for the newcomer, tackling him to the ground, his tail swishing wildly to and fro in elation.

Relief came crashing over him in a dizzying wave, the world swaying. Inhaling sharply, Ezra steadied himself and regained his balance, the deafening buzz in his ears falling and rising as he turned and started walking. They were distracted. He could slip away now, find his strength somewhere else. Somewhere safe and far, far away from these wolves. He didn't want to become their chew-toy as soon as the whim struck them.

He noted another wolf in his path—when had she arrived?—and veered around her, a whisper of honey and lilac teasing his nose. He might have managed two more steps past her before the ground leached the strength from his legs and yanked itself sideways, making him stumble to the nearest tree for support. His breath came rapid and dry, and he clenched his eyes shut against the treacherous, moving world. What was happening to him?

Journey to the Heart Coolte18

Time kept ticking as all the newcomers kept popping in front left to right. Her nostrils were becoming overwhelmed to the new scents and it was beginning to make her regret even coming here. All she wanted in this exact moment was food and water; something that the others didn't seem to bothered by. But then again, who is she to judge. Scanning her eyes around the surrounding area, she noticed a male wolf come in, completely oblivious to the presence of her and the dog who still seemed to be very on edge. He almost looked like he was becoming consumed by his thoughts and his trance seemed to be disrupted once he found himself trip over the she-wolf that was sleeping as she got here. Quietly wincing to herself in embarrassment for him, she heard her snap out 'Watch it!' from her mouth, clearly upset over the fact that he disrupted her only time to take a much needed nap. Even Kali herself could use one herself. The stranger was quick to apologize, stating out his reason for not noticing anyone. He seemed restless and tired, just like everyone else. The first thing she noticed were his eyes. Each eye was a different color, blue and yellow. A classic combination.

The dog and other wolf who seemed to be paired up with the she-wolf who was resting seemed to be occupied with one another. The dog was quite tensed up and he didn't look the best either. His behavior was becoming abnormal and it kind of looked like he just wanted to get the hell out of here. They were being smart with words and she could tell neither of them were getting along with it as much. Instead, the wolf just explained about how he's just trying to look for some water. 'I believe you could say that for anyone.' She thought to herself. As much as the wolf was in desperate need for water, she wasn't going to let it take over her emotions. Instead, she just stood there, looking calm compared to the dog who was still having some trouble. Turning her head to look at him, she wasn't sure of whether or not she should start becoming concerned for him.

The dog quickly lost his balance, he seemed to be getting dizzy. Watching him try to keep it together, her ear slightly twitched as she kept contemplating to herself. Trying to act as if she wasn't paying any attention, he started to walk away from everyone. Being surprised by her presence, he seemed to have not realized her as well by his reaction. Passing by her, he managed to get a couple of steps more before he stumbled towards a tree trunk that managed to catch him. Turning around, she slightly cleared her throat before she walked up to him. "Are you.. okay?" She asked, genuine concern lacing her words.

Freya watched the exchange between the two dark males with growing intent to see how things would play out. She wanted to step in, do something that might waver the two from wanting to kill each other but it suddenly occurred to her that she wouldn't have to. Just as quickly as the scene unfolded, one of the males, a Domestic, fell to the ground as though the pull of gravity proved stronger than he. Freya rose to her feet, concerned. Another she wolf shared her thoughts and moved to comfort the fallen dog.

Freya considered moving closer but she hesitated. Her encounter with Domestics hadn't pleasant most recently and she worried the dog meant to trick them. She opened her mouth, then closed it. Her jaw tightened and she found herself frozen for a moment. The state of the dog clearly indicated her needed to drink water. "We need to find water." She voiced, louder than she should have. The others seemed clueless to her eyes and Freya had an idea of where to find some, but they needed to get the male back on his feet. "I heard of a place..." she began..."the Oasis...it might be our only chance." The desert hadn't seen rainfall this year, a dry heat, or she would dog for water herself.

Dehydration and exhaustion had taken their toll on the masculines body. Over the span of time he had been traveling within the wasteland the skin beneath the lushious coat had begun to lose what little mostiture it previously had forcing it to become dry and almost brittle. Previously Akela believed everything his eyes showed him were falsely images created by a mind going insane. That was until he was finally physically able to touch one, a sleeping she wolf. The moment his appendages made contact with her, he knew he messed up. She suddenly struck out with a snapping mawl but, who could blame her? At the same time maybe sleeping wasn’t the best choice right now because the odds of not waking up seemed to be increasing the more the sun's rays shone down onto the landscape. Soon after her apology came from her lips and Akela nodded, “Eventually I can make it up to you.. If i ever am able to find something to hunt that is.” he muttered to himself while readjusting into a more comfortable position. More voices caught his attention as two brutes, one clearly not a lobo. Lifting his ears to hear the words exchanged between them caused memories of an old pack mate to flood his mind. Fallen, a canine he had grown up with who should’ve just been born into the same liter. They had grown so close together that the two brutes were inseparable from the time they could explore their den until they went separate ways after leaving their birth pack. Could this really be him? As Akela looked on with squinting eyes in an attempt to focus his blurring vision he realized it was in fact his dark coated pal. Fallen must’ve realized this as well, only sooner because sure enough Fallen came plowing into Akela and sent him back onto the sand. Chuckling and nudging his head against his friends Akela greeted him, “It’s great to see you again.” Once Fallen pulled his weight off of Akela and sat beside him fighting to stop his thumping tail. “Not much has changed aside from the obvious eh?” he said as he lifted his paw and hit Fallens own. Before he could rekindle his relationship with the ebony wolf there was a heavy thud against the ground nearby soon after the dog had left the wolves. Did he fall? Raising his head upward some he could vividly spot a dark shape against the brightness of the sand. Located rather close to him was another wolf who shared a coat color similar to that of the ground, it was rather pretty on a wolf. She must’ve been the voice he heard greeting everyone soon after his collison with the resting wolf. It probably would be some time before he’d be able to tell the difference between what was real and what was not. The first female spoke out then mentioning the need for water and the hopeful odds of finding the oasis. “I can help at least get him to his feet…” he volunteered. Across his travels Akela had not faced any domestics so, he wasn’t trying to be similar to his ancestors from the start and automatically despise him but, only time would tell.

Fallen's ear twitched at the canine's response. He quietly huffed. He's sassier than I am. the dark colored male thought as he looked towards the dog. "Worth more than yours, I'm not the one tense with raised hackles ya know. I mean if I was threatening I'd get it. But I'm pretty sure I was just walking." Fallen replied nonchalantly, shrugging his shoulders, resolved in the knowledge that this would probably be the one canine that wouldn't accept his friendship or his humor no matter how hard Fallen would try to give it to him. Not long after that exchange Fallen got distracted by an old friend. He thoroughly humiliated himself as predicted, but Akela didn't seem to mind at all. He actually just chuckled about it, and nudged him in response. Fallen grinned as he slid off of him. "Man am I glad to see you. It sucks so bad around here when you're alone." he said with a heaved sigh. He grinned again when Akela spoke more, "Not a thing." he replied.
A thump caught Fallen's attention, his ears twitched as he switched his gaze from his friend to whatever caused the sudden noise. Only to discover it was the domesticated canine. He arched a brow as he watched the scene. So he was that bad off and still had the nerve to step up to me huh? I'll give him props for that. the dark wolf thought as he watched the two she-wolves approach the downed canine. Even I'm not crazy enough to attempt a fight when that exhausted and dehydrated though. He was removed from his thoughts  when Freya mentioned needing water, and knowing of a place called an oasis. His honeyed orbs returned once more to his old packmate as he volunteered to help the dog to his feet. Fallen tilted his head briefly but shrugged. "I'll help if he accepts it. Under the condition he doesn't bite me when I try of course." Fallen said as he stood up. From his point of view the canine wanted nothing to do with wolves, let alone to get help from them, and he had yet to prove otherwise. But it wasn't in Fallen to just leave a fellow canine hanging.
His father would've jumped in just the same, and would be disappointed if he didn't. As hopeless as it seemed, he was still determined to get the dog to, at least, tolerate his existence, even if they couldn't be friends. He walked over to the she-wolves and the dog. Knowing Akela probably wasn't far behind, Fallen made sure to position himself so he would be the first one getting snapped at if the domestic tried to. He was probably too weak to actually injure any of them, Fallen knew that, but it wouldn't feel good, might even hurt, and he wasn't willing to take that risk. Akela was his best friend, and he was at least acquainted with Freya. He had no idea who the other she-wolf was, but he'd help her too. Being there all together with the same needs in mind had to mean something right? So if this was a future pack in the making, he'd protect them, to include the domestic. He was born, raised and trained to do just that after-all.

Journey to the Heart Empty Re: Journey to the Heart

He dragged air into his lungs, holding it there as he closed his eyes, then slowly released his breath. It took him a few moments to realise the female wolf had approached him and a few more to process her question. Erza gave her a sidelong glance, studying her face to see if the sincere concern in her voice was reflected in her expression—her eyes—trying to keep his breathing even and strong. He rose his head slightly, forced the weakness from his posture and pretended he wasn't still slumped against that tree with trembling legs. "Fine," he said gruffly.

The other female spoke up, her voice carrying through the grove, but Erza only heard 'water'. He swallowed, mouth and throat painfully dry, and prayed he didn't appear as desperately hopeful as he felt. He waited for her to say more of this 'oasis' and carelessly reveal its location, instead finding the attention of all four wolves on him. A tang of fear sharpened his mind, swiftly hidden as the black wolf rose to his feet and, like the other male, offered to help him.

Erza pulled back his lips, revealing his teeth as he had done in reply to the male's answer earlier, showing rather than speaking his mind on the matter. The mightier-than-thou attitude he had expected. They were wolves, after all. But their offer to help reeked of deception and danger, and he didn't want them anywhere close to him; they wouldn't be far enough away if the entire desert lay between them.

"I'm fine," he repeated, louder this time, and pushed off the tree in demonstration, turning to face them so he could easily watch their every movement. He teetered some yet managed to stay upright without aid and shot the two males a glare that dared them to comment. At least they would reveal their true nature should they do so.

Taking another breath, he closed his eyes against the incessant pounding in his skull, then turned to one of the females. "Where's this..." he paused, unsure if he was about to make a dire mistake by giving these wolves a sliver of his trust. "...this oasis?" He sighed, weary and tired. Desperation made a fool of everyone.

Journey to the Heart Empty Re: Journey to the Heart

Freya watched with a growing curiosity as the males behind her agreed to assist in the dogs walk to the Oasis. Freya didn't think long on the idea, for the odds of reaching such a place were slim at best. She had heard more tales of failure than success but no success and no mention of failure ment something. What if those who never came back actually found the Oasis and stayed there, rolling in the peace of such a fantasized place? She wouldn't know anything until they got a move on.

The domestic pulled her from her thoughts as he proved he was stronger than her looked though still weak in the knees. She wanted to step on his nose.... "Give it a rest." She snapped. She sighed. "We can't afford tensions right now. The Oasis is said to be at the center of a mountain here in the desert. The Heart, they call it. I've heard its more of a canyon than a mountain, but even so...I want to know for myself." From her experience in the dispersal pack she came from, Freya had learned servival skills but digging the hard earth beneath her would hurt her paws. The best they can do is find shelter and travel at night. Still, she worried for the Domestic.

She tried to level with everyone. "Look, I know we all just met, but by the look of us, we could perish tomorrow or the next and not a lot of time to turn back home. If we rest now, we can travel better at night." She suggested. "The fittest of us, myself included, can hunt game here for others to build their strength." She looked around at each, even the Domestic. She had a higher purpose than survival. In truth, the others could leave here and get home, even the Domestic with help. But Freya had grown tired of the separated factions and felt that the Oasis might be her one chance at freedom.

"For me, the Oasis is freedom. And for that, I will do what I must to get there. If I can help it, I don't want to go alone." It was her pack instincts talking. On top of that, she had grown tired of living as a lonely wolf. "My name is Freya, a warrior of the Western Provinces. I hope my words can bring us together, even if not to the same place but as an understanding." She wanted to change the life of those who inhabitated Canidea and it was now that she realized this. Whether she was alone in her thoughts or others banded together with her, she wanted to make a difference in life and it started with the group around her...And a leader.

Journey to the Heart Coolte18

Hearing the Domestic deeply inhale before exhaling, he clamped his eyes shut before realizing Kali's presence. He seemed a bit surprised by her showing genuine concern and she honestly wasn't bothered by it. He was the only Domestic surrounded by a lot of wolves, he must be a least a little overwhelmed by the thought. The other two males who were with them seemed to have known each other once she realized how they were so happy seeing each other. They were speaking each other like they have known each other for years, which they probably did.

Turning her attention back at the dog in front of him, he seemed to have shrug off her question by proving himself that he's okay and to leave him alone. He pushed himself off of the tree that he was leaning against before he lowly mumbled out a simple 'fine'. Deciding not to ask any further questions, she nodded and left him alone. Kali was a bit surprised when the two males offered to help the Domestic out, but of course, he turned it down by trying to prove that he was okay once again. "What's so wrong with accepting help?" She lowly asked only for the dog to hear her.

"We need to find water," The she-wolf spoke out, mentioning a place that she thinks we could possibly find. Something that has to do with an 'oasis'. Like everyone else, her attention was peaked over what she had to say about the place. "Look, I know we all just met, but by the look of us, we could perish tomorrow or the next and not a lot of time to turn back home. If we rest now, we can travel better at night." Nodding more to herself, Kali couldn't agree more. There was so much tension going on in this small group, all she really wanted was to just find food and water. Her body felt completely exhausted and her eyes were beginning to feel heavy. When she mentioned about the fittest hunting down some game for the rest of them, Kali tried her best to keep her attention heavily on her.

"My name is Freya, a warrior of the Western Provinces. I hope my words can bring us together, even if not to the same place but as an understanding." Sitting on top of her haunches, Kali wrapped her tail around her paws before she spoke. "Kali. I'm kind of just here.." She spoke out, ending it with a shrug.

Journey to the Heart Empty Re: Journey to the Heart

The tension between all the canines full of testosterone grew heavier and heavier. Perhaps the intensity of the sheer heat blasting down onto their pelts was another contribution and with the focus of this so-called oasis in mind, Akela began to ponder if it would help settle the other masculines. However he also knew if a physical altercation needed to happen, he’d be right at his friends side. Though how much of a challenge would one domestic be compared to two natives? The multi colored beast did not enjoy fighting whether it be physical or verbal but from the few small scuffles he’d been involved in.. well, he’s the one without the scars to show.

Refocusing his attention back to the ebony shaded domestic, Akela flicked his ears in response to the dog's words. His orbs shifted slightly to Fallen and snorted low, knowing his companion would understand the message enough. And to think I thought us natives were the stubborn ones, he thought, well the pooch can’t say we never offered him anything at least. Suddenly the las he had stepped on earlier snapped out with venomous words. Amusement instantly flooded over the male as he allowed his tail to flop a few times behind him. However her words were true, they needed to stop and figure a way out.. Together or not. Without hesitation the male cleared his throat and spoke out, “And what if this oasis turns out to be nothing more than a myth?” pausing for a moment before adding, “I don’t mean any offense but, I don’t want to die a slow death. I agree with you. We need to stick together if we want to see the coming days, if we like it or not. While we’re all saying our introductions.. Names Akela, a hunter of the Eastern Province.

"What's wrong with accepting help?"

Erza broke off his glare at the two males, favouring the female with a frown. Nothing was wrong with accepting help. Not in itself. But accepting help from a wolf? That got one killed—or worse. He knew it. She knew it. And he wasn't going to fall for this act of empathy any time soon.

His jaws parted but before the words could rise from his breast the other female snapped. "Give it a rest. We can't afford tensions right now." He clamped his mouth shut and sighed. He couldn't afford anything right now. Not this pounding in his head, not these wolves surrounding him as the heat bore down on their bodies, not even this moment of letting his guard down. Yet here he was, allowing all of it.

His voice croaked, rasping in his dry throat, as he asked where this supposed oasis might be, still unaware what that word meant and why it might be their only chance to survive. Follow me and I'll save your life! It still sounded like a trap to his ears. But what did that matter at this point? Why should he care? He could find his way back north once night fell, using the stars as guidance, but in his current state there was no way he would survive the whole trek back. His life was forfeit already.

That small, unlikely chance they offered... He had to take it. Had to risk it.

He sat down heavily, listening as the female spoke of the oasis and where it could be found, as she suggested a plan for the coming night on how they might survive the heat and drought. He found it hard to believe anything could live in this barren wasteland yet she seemed sure it did as she talked of a hunt. In some way, he shouldn't be surprised things lived here. His own home was just a different kind of wasteland and he still managed to find enough for a full stomach.

She introduced herself as Freya, a warrior of the Western Provinces. The other female, sitting beside him, named herself Kali, offering no such fanciful title. He committed their names to memory, shoving them in a spot of his mind that did not ache as much as the rest.

One of the males, Akela, cleared his throat and spoke up, expressing his doubts about this oasis, dubbing it a mere myth. Great.

"If it's a myth," he broke in, "We would've lost nothing. We might as well take this leap of faith. My name is Ezra," he introduced himself, feeling strange. Willingly handing over his name to a bunch of wolves... had a dog ever done such a thing since their banishment?

The domestic, as stubborn as ever just sort of stared the native and his friend down. Fallen almost couldn't believe what he was seeing. He took pride in his own stubborn ways, but the dog was more or less putting him to shame with all this fuss. Sooner rather than later his fuse would run out unfortunately. He genuinely had no idea what was so wrong with accepting help. Sure they were different species, but they all had the same goal of survival didn't they? So why be at odds. The brute huffed, frustrated mainly at the confusion than anything or anyone. The ebony wolf could feel his friends gaze on him and he glanced over at him. He nodded his gratitude understanding what was unspoken. He didn't intend on letting it reach that though. He didn't want to hurt anyone even on bad days, and all things considered today wasn't that bad, so why would he now?
His ear twitched as Freya spoke out, giving a speech about this Oasis being a sign of hope and freedom to her, and Fallen nodded in agreement. She introduced herself as a warrior from the west, and the earthy female introduced herself as Kali and not much more. Akela introduced himself as well and Fallen grinned. When it was his turn he introduced himself as well. "I'm Fallen, a warrior from the eastern province." Freya mentioned about the healthier ones going out to hunt for the rest, and Fallen nodded once more "I'm fit to, so I'll join your hunting party." he responded. Meanwhile Kali and the dog had some sort of silent conversation. He didn't seem aggressive and she didn't seem distressed so Fallen kept his attention on Freya and Akela. His friend mentioned it being a myth and not wanting to doe slowly, and Fallen slightly frowned. He nudged his shoulder against his friend. "I'm here you know. The last wolf dying here, much less dying slow is going to be you." Fallen said, and he lightly nipped and tugged on Akela's ear. trying his best to get him to be more optimistic, and less realistic and pessimistic.
It was around here that the dog interrupted. Introducing himself as Ezra, and saying they might as well take the risk. Fallen couldn't help but grin to himself. The dog hated him plenty, but all Fallen felt was respect and it just kept building. He nodded after Ezra finished talking. That is when Fallen realized he actually told them his name. That's got to be a good sign right? Maybe he's finally coming around? That or it's a truce. he thought. But whatever it was or meant, he was happy they were being tolerant for now.

While Freya seemed well on bored,, it seemed some didn't think their situation too dire. The tan female Freya now knew as Kali simply seemed to follow the crowd. On the other hand, Akela had more to say on the matter. Freya eyes the blue and orange gaze that left her to be questioned. He had a point, but something done is better than laying down their heads in the sand and waiting for death. The desert left many to wander and most of them...without mercy.

Freya would have opened her maw to object, but it seemed the Domestic, named Ezra, seemed more understanding and bluntly pointed out that none would have anything to lose. Freya didn't know if any of the canines before her had family or friends they would be leaving behind but she did know that the group might grow something bigger than enemies of an ancient war Freya didn't support. As she looked at each of the others, she could picture the fight and bullying she had witnessed in her younger years. She was glad in that moment that the occurrence had made her all the more wiser.

Knowing that she had more cooperation for the journey to the Oasis, Freya nodded, pleased that even with tensions, the group had come to their senses. She only needed to figure out what they would do for food. "Alright, now that we are in reasonable agreement, lets see about food and water." She turned in a slow circle to take in the area, speaking as she did so not minding if the gesture seemed rather odd. "Fallen, you and I can scout ahead to see about food and water. Kali, you can stay with our friend here and keep him company. Akela, you stay with them and keep an eye out for-

Even though she had been barking orders, the scent couldn't be ignored. A strong east wind carried the foul scent of wild Dingos into her nostrils and Freya snarled. As the wind passed she turned to the East and through a cloud of dust, a pack of likely twelve to 15 dogs appeared before her. Her fur spiked and her instincts kicked in to let her know the pack wasn't here on friendly terms. She had heard the stores and she knew they were outnumbered. Two dogs separated from their posse and stopped at a distance she wasn't comfortable with. "Well what do we have here?" One of them scoffed. "A group of mutts." the other answered for his leader. She could smell no fear in the air. She didn't want to know why they were here. She could have guessed. In fact, she knew no stories of those surviving an attack from a pack of dingos. Domestics, Native, Hybrid...It didn't matter. Dingos were a unique breed of their own and no one seemed to out-match their ferocity in a pack. Freya didn't even know what to do at first. She stood froze, unsure.

Journey to the Heart Empty Re: Journey to the Heart

The voice of the domestic called Ezra surprised the masculine the most. Perhaps he was becoming more comfortable with the surrounding animals. Mentally shaking off the possibility of such an idea to be true. Sighing slightly before speaking out again, “I suppose you’re right, Ezra. What else do we have to lose at this point?” Perhaps small amounts of kindness would help to break the stubbornness from the animal. Yet Akela could not blame him - domestics were banished by the very species he was surrounded by. As the generations and stories had passed the rivalry between wolves and dogs only seemed to intensify. If they were to separate for simply not seeing eye to eye, none of them would survive to tell this tale. The chances of survival were greater as long as all five would simply get along versus fester on something their ancestors decided. Every single one of them shared at least one thing in common, the need to live the next day. The las Akela had stepped on after his own arrival to the growing group, Freya, spoke out again. It had already seemed that she was beginning to show signs of leading the group on the journey ahead. At least one of us can handle the pressure of leadership, he thought, better her than me. She stated that Fallen would go with her to assist in scouting ahead for any signs of danger or possible food opportunities. Akela was to remain with Ezra and the sandy colored female who recently introduced herself with the name Kali. Trying his best to remember all the new names forming in his mind with matching faces was easy. Just before Akela had the chance to respond to Freya a horrid scent similar to carrion filled his nasal passages. Snorting loudly as a large pack of dingos came into view while two separated themselves; already barking out insults. Despite the lack of energy Akela had he noticed Freya’s body language shift from confident to nervous. Rising onto his appendages and quickly joining her side with a raised tail and lips curled over to reveal ivory incisors. There was no way they could win this fight but Akela wouldn’t go down easily.

He listened in silence as Freya dished out tasks like leadership was second nature to her, voice sure and confident. Erza snorted softly as she referred to him as their "friend" but the sound lacked commitment and he had little fire left in him to correct her. Let them think as they may, let them speak as they wish. His prejudices hadn't changed and it would take more than a common goal to change this.

He allowed himself the relative luxuary of sitting down, stifling a sigh of relief as his weight was taken from his hind legs. He wanted to lay down in a cool area and rest but he knew he couldn't close his eyes and sleep. Not until his stomach was full and his tongue moist once more. Only when he was sure they were all fast asleep would he let it claim him as well.

Freya's division of labour fell mostly on deaf ears to him, but her snarl speared through him like an icicle through water and he was instantly on guard. Not until a rotten scent forced itself up his nostrils did he realise the snarl wasn't a threat directed at him but a warning to them all.

Materializing like wraiths from the desert sands, a pack of dingoes appeared. If they felt the sun's fading heat, they did not show it, their postures upright and unburdened, looking for trouble. A jeering smile bared the leader's teeth as he voiced a taunting question, his companion all too eager to answer.

Erza kept himself seated, knowing standing up would reveal his weakness clear as lightning on a moonless night. Freya seemed to have lost her confidence in the face of danger, any sign of her leadership snuffed out and taken by the wind. Akela showed no such uncertainties, striding beside her with his teeth bared. If it was a fight they wanted, the male didn't seem afraid to meet the challenge. But going teeth to teeth with the pack spelled certain doom for them all. They couldn't win this with brawn. Not against so many. They had to talk their way out. Either that or flee and hope at least one of them escaped with their life. Erza knew it wouldn't be him.
